Roll top desk is a 19th century reworking of the pedestal desk, with, in addition, a series of stacked compartments, shelves, drawers and hooks in front of the users. In contrast to these the compartments and the desktop surface of a roll top desk can be covered by means of wooden slats that roll or slide through slots in the raised sides of the desk. In that, it is a descendant in function, and partly in form, of the cylinder desk of the 18th century.
Features of a roll top desk include:
* Usually made of wood like solid oak, cherry, mahogany etc.
* You can find some with wheels fitted on the bottom for easy maneuverability.
* By rolling down the top it can be converted into a fully functioning piece of furniture.
* You can add on drawers, storage files and raised panels if you wish.
* You can choose to fit a door for the CPU and printer.
* Slots and compartments can be added for accessories and documents.
The biggest advantage to a roll top desk is that it is a useful piece of furniture no matter where you keep it. Whether it is in the living room, study, hallway or other room it can work to the room's advantage.
Another good feature is that you can install safety locks and latches on your roll top desk. The solid wood makes an extra safety feature.
The roll top is also quite helpful as it reduces the amount of cleaning you have to do. The roll top doesn't gather dust (unless left for a long time) so this minimizes the amount of time that you need to spend cleaning.
Roll top desks were extremely popular in the 19th and 20th century, especially in small to medium sized offices. Because of this many of them were made. These can now be found in antique stores and flea markets for a good price.

This has made the roll top desk an interior designer dream and made them popular in many offices across the country.
