Sauna Spa
"My husband (or wife, son, friend) is allergic to chlorine use in my spa." That is a common comment made by the owners of spa and jacuzzi, not be thoroughly and properly caring for it. The thing is, itching and rashes are almost 99.99% preventable. The bacteria that cause itching and rash is called Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a very commonly occurring bacteria found in water and soil.
"Pseudomonas aeruginosa" (PA) is also a very opportunistic bacteria. PA can cause:
- Urinary Tract Infections
- Dermatitis (skin rash or Pseudomonas folliculitis)
- Respiratory infections - sometimes called "hot tub lung"
- The ear Swimmer's Ear (Otitis Externa) - please contact your local doctor for treatment
- Other systemic infections
In Spas & Hot Tubs, a very likely cause of the rash is Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA). Pseudomonas is fed by oil and grease present in spa water (mainly from the body oils and skin treatments introduced in the Spa insufficiently bathers shower before entering the spa or hot tub) and can multiply rapidly under ideal conditions (such as lack of appropriate disinfection). In the pools, PA can be found in various areas such as the pool to tackle the waterfall edges, steps, etc. PA infects the hair follicles in the body. If infected, you will notice the following characteristics of Pseudomonas aeruginosa:
- Itchy rash 8 to 48 hours after contamination.
- Rash may occur on the arms, legs or trunk.
- Rash disappears 7 to 10 days without treatment.
The first question I ask clients is "where" the rash is. PA because he likes to live and multiply in water, the "best" place for this is in any area of the spa or hot tub, but especially along and at the waterline. Customers usually tell us that the rash is through the back or under the arms or the back of the legs or a combination in all these areas. Depending on the severity of the "infestation" of Pseudomonas bacteria and the sensitivity of the bather will determine how serious the outbreak. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR IF creating a serious rash.
Remember that it is best to avoid that these eruptions always occur in the first place. Although the chemistry water and adequate use of disinfectants is important, regular cleaning and maintenance is equally important. Regular cleaning means something as simple as cleaning all spa surfaces by hand or a cloth every time I go in I know it sounds crazy (drives my wife a bit crazy really - but not the rash in more than 20 years for the owner). Cleaning aid in cleaning and circulation. Simply put properly sterilized and treated water at the upper edge of the spa where the cover has been sitting (the creation of its own bio-film) will help eliminate unwanted bacteria that can cause a rash on the bottom of the arms while sit in the spa with his arms out, leaning on the edge.
If you suspect that your spa or hot tub is infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, perform the following steps Cleaning:
- Drain the spa.
- Remove the filter and immersion in a bleach solution and water during treatment. (2 tablespoons dichlor granular chlorine sodium per 5 gallons of water)
- Clean all spa surfaces that may come into contact with the skin of a swimmer (especially in armpits, chest and back) - above and below the waterline. Make sure the treated water chlorine or hot tub regularly in contact with these areas - even the top of the spa that is in contact with the deck. Use a mild bleach solution as mentioned above.
- Refill spa to just above the jets.
- Clash with four times the normal dose of chlorine SpaGuard ® Concentrate.
- Turn on the jets and circulate for 2 to 3 hours. The bacterial growth usually builds up in the lines, it is necessary to thoroughly clean.
- Just before draining the spa again, add a line of plumbing and Spa Cleaner Download System, or Swirl immediately to help break any accumulation of biofilm lines (this is a good maintenance step to take at any time that a spa is drained and refilled)
- Refill with fresh water.
- Chemically clean (use a filter cleaner as SpaGuard ® Cleaner ®) and / or replace the filter. Chemically cleaning the filter helps remove fats accumulated oils, dead skin, etc.
- Rebalance spa and shock. Chlorine levels: 1.0 to 3.0 ppm, bromine: 2.5 to 5.0 ppm, pH 7.4 to 7.6, alkalinity total 100 to 140 ppm, calcium hardness 200 to 250 ppm. (using other types of disinfectants, be sure to follow all manufacturer instructions on label). Do not write spa to chlorine disinfectant () the level drops below 4.0 ppm.
- As an extra precaution, we recommend cleaning the bottom of the spa or hot tub insulation cover with a product such as BioGuard ® Stow Away ® (containing quaternary ammonium compounds, which when used correctly controls fungi). Clean your home with Stow Away ® every time you drain, clean and refill your spa or hot tub. In addition, you may want to use a product like the new Mist that helps control odors and discoloration in the spa inside the insulating foam covering.
- Do not clean the cabinet could re-contaminate the spa or hot tub surface with PA bacteria.
